Personal Shrine, our latest temporary outdoor installation, was presented at Lacawac Sanctuary in Lake Ariel, PA in summer 2018. The pentagonal Personal Shrine has hand-dyed fabric panels, with an opening for passersby to enter the sculpture. The patterns on the Personal Shrine are drawn from Islamic geometric designs found on the facade of a mausoleum in Mosul, Iraq (Mausoleum of Yahya Abu al-Qasim), which was destroyed by the Islamic State in 2014. We installed the sculpture along a public hiking trail near the entrance to this nature preserve. Visitors are invited to enter the shrine for contemplation, and it is designed for a single person at a time. |
