Tree of Knowledge, 2023. Hand-dyed linen and cotton. 58 x 78 inches. |
Tree of Knowledge is a group of textile panels that proposes a new, secular Tree of Knowledge origin myth for civilization. Inspired by early libraries and present-day libraries as a seat of knowledge, the work re-envisions the beginning of civilization. The artworks incorporate Islamic geometric patterns and architecture of the 13th century, specifically from al-Madrasa al-Mustansiriyya in ancient Baghdad, one of the earliest centers for learning. Each tree depicted is based on drawings of street trees and community gardens in San Francisco. Designed for a temporary installation at the main branch of the San Francisco Public Library, the panels are double-sided, so that they may be visible from the library’s central atrium and from an interior upper floor. |
